Amm(i)gone
Created, co-directed, and performed by Adil Mansoor
Co-directed by Lyam B. Gabel
MAR 13–APR 7, 2025
Adil Mansoor is a Virgo Pakistani-American theater queerdo. His mother is an Aquarian hijabi Quranic scholar. Since she discovered Adil’s queerness online, their once-close bond now needs rescue. In AMMIGONE—stylized as Amm(i)gone, a portmanteau of “ammi” (“mother” in Urdu) and the Greek heroine Antigone, Mansoor invites us on a journey of heartbreak and repair between mother and son as they embark on an examination and translation of Sophocles’ Antigone into Urdu. Passionately mining Greek tragedy, Islam, and their own memories, they seek to recover their love across faith.
The New York Premiere of Amm(i)gone is presented in association with PlayCo, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, and Kelly Strayhorn Theater.
Amm(i)gone is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by Kelly Strayhorn Theater in partnership with The Theater Offensive and NPN. Amm(i)gone was developed as a Hatch Arts Collective project.

Community Engagement Programming
Join us for a wide-ranging series of Idea Lab community offerings, before and after the show. Curated alongside our artists and community partners, these events bring us together in inclusive, safe spaces for reflection, learning, and celebration.
This year’s community nights are proudly sponsored by LUNAR, an AAPI-owned craft hard seltzer made with real Asian fruits, and SANZO, the first Asian-inspired sparkling water.
All pre and post-show events are free and included in your ticket to that performance of Amm(i)gone. Please RSVP to pre- and post-show events separately due to limited space.
SCHEDULE
Friday, March 14th | Post-Performance
Envisioning Queer Muslimhood Panel
In a world insistent on envisioning Islam and queerness as distinct entities, Pakistani playwright Fatima A. Maan invites queer Muslim artists to discuss the beliefs and practices that support their art and reflect on how their identities and lived realities bleed into their work.
Saturday, March 15th | Post-Performance
AuntieSocial hosted by LaWhore Vagistan
After the play, head downstairs to The Pete for AuntieSocial, a nighttime talk show hosted by overdressed, overeducated, overopinionated drag queen LaWhore Vagistan, featuring Adil Mansoor and other guests.
Saturday, March 22nd | 6:45 - 8pm
Third Culture Kid & Global Majority Night
Arrive early for our pre-show Happy Hour in The Pete, which centers on Global Majority and international audience members. We provide nibbles and libations, you bring yourself (and a friend!). Afterward, join us upstairs for the 8pm performance of Amm(i)gone.
*Global Majority refers to those who identify as “black, Asian, brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or have been racialized as 'ethnic minorities'.” TCK are those who have “spent their formative years in places not their parent’s homelands.”
Monday, March 24th | 5:45 - 7pm
TheatreMakers Night with community partner Fresh Lime Soda
Join us for a pre-show Happy Hour for TheatreMakers. If you’ve contributed in any way to the creation and realization of a theatrical work—whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in any aspect of its development—you are a theatremaker. After the happy hour, join us upstairs for the 7pm performance.
Thursday, March 27th + Wednesday, April 2nd
Open Captioning
Thanks to an accessibility grant from TDF's Tap Plus program, PlayCo and The Flea are partnering with C2 Caption Coalition to provide open captioning during two performances of Amm(i)gone for our deaf and hard-of-hearing community members.
Thursday, April 3rd | 5:45 - 7pm
Eid al-Fitr Celebration with Musical Guest Shahzad Ismaily
Celebrate the end of Ramadan with a performance by Shahzad Ismaily, the multi-instrumentalist The New York Times called “musicians’ favorite musician,” featuring plenty of food (samosas abound) and drink, and followed by the 7pm performance of Amm(i)gone upstairs.
Sunday, April 6th | Post-Performance
Urdu Captioned Matinee Performance and Intergenerational Panel with community partner Desi Rainbow Parents and Allies
Thanks to an award from NYC Cultural Affairs’ Language Access Fund, we are able to provide Urdu captioning for ELL audiences for this performance. Stick around after the performance for an intergenerational post-show conversation hosted by our community partner, Desi Rainbow Parents and Allies.
